Zudem waren sie politisch aktiv, unter anderem als Göttinger Universitätsprofessoren und Mitglieder der "Göttinger Sieben". Weitere bedeutende Arbeiten sind die "Deutsche Grammatik" sowie der Beginn des Werks "Deutsches Wörterbuch". Die Brüder kamen nur bis zum Stichwort "Frucht". Das Wörterbuch wurde 1960 von Sprachwissenschaftlern fertiggestellt. Jakob starb am 20. September 1863 in Berlin, wo auch sein Bruder am 16. Dezember 1859 verschieden war.
