Meanwhile Matthew Shardlake is given an intriguing legal case by an old servant of Queen Catherine Parr. Once arrived, Shardlake and Barak find themselves in a city preparing to become a war zone; and Shardlake takes the opportunity to also investigate the mysterious past of Ellen Fettiplace, a young woman incarcerated in the Bedlam. The emerging mysteries around the young ward, and the events that destroyed Ellen's family nineteen years before, involve Shardlake in reunions both with an old friend and an old enemy close to the throne. Events will converge on board one of the King's great warships, primed for battle in Portsmouth harbour . . .

    Regardless of how good this book is you should be aware that it is significantly cheaper as a hard back book from most book stores. Whist I love my iBooks and therefore would be happy to pay a similar price to RRP but at £11.99 for a digital book is a complete rip off and apple & iBooks should be ashamed! The most an ibook should cost is the RRP for a paperback. 18th Dec 2011 still priced at £8.99 over £4 more than kindle's version and more than a standard paperback!

    As with all mr samsons novels it was a book that once opened I was unable to put down.. The story and details were as always so in-depth that you felt transported back in time being able to feel the atmosphere smells and tension in a age where everyday life was hard and fearful . I felt I was loosing a close friend as I finished it and can only hope it's not the last in what has been a fantastic series. I would recommend anyone to buy this novel as I believe there at very few books that can give you as much enjoyment. C J Samson has a gift in writing and it's be a privilege to be able to have been able to read them tkankyou

    Another excellent read. The subtle introduction to the future Queen Bess gives hope that sergeant Shardlake has many an adventure to come - and will not be denied his part in the demise of Richard Rich!
